We have chosen Morlais which is near Esentepe, about twenty minutes' drive east of Kyrenia on the beautiful island of Cyprus and where the local currency is Turkish Lira rather than the more costly Euro. Esentepe is to the east of Kyrenia, giving easy access to Salamis, Famagusta and the Karpaz peninsula.
As with Wold Cottage, Villa Ekim is furnished and equipped to a high standard. Again, we endeavour to provide a home from home and to ensure this we are just offering the Villa to guests for a few months of the year.
It accommodates up to four people and it has its own 10m by 5m Roman end outdoor pool and air conditioning in the bedrooms. All of the windows & French windows have fly screens fitted.
The Villa sleeps up to four people and the price is between £350 and £550 per week, with a discount for second or subsequent weeks.
For prices and availability please contact us.
The Villa comprises;
Terrace: This is a peaceful retreat which overlooks and opens out onto the pool area and the garden. The villa is only 100 or so metres from the sea and so the views are lovely!
Kitchen: The kitchen has a breakfast bar and French windows to the rear garden. The appliances are Bosch and include a large gas hob & an electric oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine, water cooler and ironing facilities.
Sitting Room: This has beautiful views out to sea and French windows to the terrace which has a curved pergola and rattan furniture. There are also French windows to the rear garden. There is a DVD player and a selection of books.
Bedrooms: There are two double bedrooms each with fitted wardrobes. One has a double bed and one has twin beds. The double bedroom has access through French windows to the pool terrace.
Bathroom: The bathroom has high quality fittings and both a bath and shower.
and directly outside ...
The garden: The main feature is the 10m by 5m pool and the remainder has been landscaped and planted with indigenous trees and shrubs. There is patio furniture and teak sun loungers.
Nearby:
The nearest large village is Esentepe which has a number of places to eat or to just have a drink. It has a variety of shops and a supermarket which is open until 10pm most nights.
The Kyrenia Mountains are immediately behind Morlais and the mountain side villages each have their own shops and restaurants. The mountains are a haven for walkers, photographers and those interested in the flora and fauna of the island. Paragliding from the ridge of the mountains is also an option …Tennis can be arranged and the breakwaters in front of Morlais provide good fishing and snorkelling.
There is scuba diving nearby at Alagadi beach which is a major player in the turtle project - several UK universities (incl Edinburgh & Exeter) are involved in monitoring the project.
The Korineum Golf Course near Esentepe offers beautiful mountain and sea views and the clubhouse is a lovely setting for lunch.
Famagusta, with its remarkable walled town is thirty minutes’ drive and on the way is the Roman city of Salamis.
The Karpaz peninsula is home to some stunning scenery and beaches, all within easy reach of the Villa.
It is possible to take coastal boat trips from Kyrenia or from some of the beaches near Esentepe or to take the ferry to Turkey from the new harbour in Kyrenia.
Nicosia is a forty minute drive and again it offers a fascinating insight into the contrast between east and west.
Eating out:
Moulos bar and restaurant is ten minutes' walk along the old coastal road from the Villa, Sea Breeze bar and restaurant is another five minutes on foot and opposite our favorite local beach. The Eagles' Nest is further along and worth the extra walk for a sundowner - fabulous views. You can drive too!
Esentepe village also has several restaurants which provide a variety of meals to suit all. Several restaurants have opened since we have owned the Villa and we now struggle to visit them all when we are there but there is now a good choice to suit varying tastes and budgets.
Bellapais is where Laurence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons of Cyprus and the village, on the hills overlooking Kyrenia, is home to the ruins of Bellapais Abbey and a range of places to eat or simply sit and enjoy the stunning views.
The Old Harbour in Kyrenia is a lovely place to while away an evening and there you will find a plethora of restaurants overlooking the sea. If you continue walking along the sea wall away from the harbour you will come to Niazi’s restaurant – it is not on the water but it has a good atmosphere (it’s opposite the Dome Hotel) beyond there is the Rocks Hotel which is nice for afternoon tea – very colonial!
Flights:
Ercan Airport, near Nicosia (Lefkosa) in Northern Cyprus, is forty minutes drive from the Villa and both PegasusAirlines and TurkishAirlines fly there. Alternatively, you can fly direct from the UK into Larnaca which is just over an hour's drive from Morlais. If you opt to fly to Larnaca you will have a choice of BritishAirways, CyprusAirlines, MonarchAirlines, Thomas Cook and EasyJet amongst others and these fly from several UK airports. It is also possible to fly into Paphos but the transfer time to the Villa is longer.
One suggestion we do have is to spend a few nights in Istanbul en route to or from Cyprus. Most of the airlines listed above fly to Istanbul and there are several flights a day from Istanbul to the Island with TurkishAirlines or PegasusAirlines .
Car Hire:
Firstly, driving is on the left here, a legacy from British administration. With either airport it is possible to arrange car hire and/or a car to collect you from the airport and take you to the Villa and we can help with arranging this.
Property Management:
The Villa is looked after by an English speaking team who will be there if needed and a welcome pack of groceries can also be arranged.
Sadly, we do not believe the Villa is suitable for young children.
